Dessert Draft

Indians add as much sugar to their dessert, as they add spice to their curries. There is a reason for Indian desserts to be so sweet, as after having a spicy meal a sweet dessert would lower the effect of spice. Indian desserts are usually milk based and sweetened with cane sugar or jaggery. Here is a list of few Indian desserts that you must try.

Gulab Jamun: is a sweet cheese based dumpling made from milk solids know as khoya and flour. They are shaped in to small dumplings and are deep fried and then soaked in light sugar syrup flavored with cardamom, cinnamon, rosewater and saffron.

Halwa: can be made from flour, lentils or vegetables like carrots or pumpkins. Halwa made from carrots are the most popular and are known as Gaajar Ka Halwa in India. It’s a milk based dessert which has grated carrots, nuts and dry fruits that is most often enjoyed warm.

Kheer: is rice pudding made from milk and sugar that is flavored with cardamom, raisins, saffron and mixed nuts. It can be enjoyed warm or cold.

Ras Malai: are dumplings made from cottage cheese which is soaked in sweetened reduced milk flavored with cardamom and nuts.

Kulfi: Kulfi is Indian ice cream made from milk and tends to be denser and creamier. There are different flavors but the traditional ones were known as malai kulfi made from cream.
